Why are we talking about winter bees in August? The eggs that the queen will lay — the eggs she is laying now — will carry us through the winter. Bees that were born earlier in the year will only live 45 days or so. The overall health of these bees must be held to a hard standard. Pest levels must be kept at a minimum. Supplemental feeding may be necessary to support the health of the hive. Our winters are tough on the bees, as our weather may be in the 30s one day and in the 60s the next day. B

What is a dearth? It is a time in the summer when pollen and nectar are almost nonexistent. What can the beekeeper do during this time? Beekeepers have a number of ways to supply pollen substitute through various feeding types. Good management means there should still be some honey left on the hive from the spring honey flow; however, when in doubt feeding with sugar water or high fructose corn syrup may be needed as a supplement.
