    My great-grandfather, Alex Stewart of Wester Blairgorts Farm, near Buchlyvie, Stirlingshire, appears in what looks to be a professionally taken photograph, probably captured using a glass-plate camera during harvest time at Blairgorts Farm. It is difficult to determine the date, but I was told that he used horse-drawn Bisset binders, as they were considered better than the American McCormick machines because they coped more effectively with the heavier crops grown in the UK.     As the autumn sheep sales are now underway at Stirling Market, I found and scanned this picture from the family collection. My mother told me that this is her cousin, Tom Adam, from Tomfyne Farm, Kilsyth. He was herding sheep to the market in Stirling, the one that was located in the centre of town next to the railway station. It was a long journey from the Kilsyth Hills, via the Carron Valley and on to the town. I think this photograph dates from around 1950.

    This copy photograph was given to me by a good friend and neighbour because it features both of our paternal grandfathers. The photograph shows a group of neighbours gathered to help David J. Muirhead (far right) stack his hay in the yard. My grandfather is the tall man in the middle. He was born in 1870 and appears to be in his early thirties, which would date the photograph to around the early 1900s.
