Riding the Texas Eagle Between Austin and San Antonio • The Austin Chronicle (opens the original)
Read excerpt
On a Sunday night, nearly 50 passengers, carting luggage, briefcases, and bicycles, stood in line to board the Texas Eagle, Amtrak’s train running from Chicago to San Antonio. The rail makes just one round trip a day from Austin to San Antonio, leaving San Antonio early in the morning and returning late at night. On the train, most of the seats were full. Sleeping passengers stretched out across benches, many of whom had been traveling for days, from Chicago or St. Louis. In the dining car, fitt
Austin’s Street Medics Race to Beat the Heat • The Austin Chronicle (opens the original)

At a table in Epoch Coffee, Carissa Stephens and Matthew Blaney are working to help Austin’s unhoused population beat the heat. The pair are encouraging coffee shop goers and passersby to take a warm-weather first aid kit to distribute to someone in need. One man stops on his way out, no doubt drawn in by the neon pink T-shirts and cardboard boxes. He eagerly grabs six first aid kits, a whole box. Still, in the nine months since the development was

A few feet away, a snowy egret wades through the water. Serenity abounds, and I am becoming completely sucked into what one of my fellow birders calls “the art of noticing.” It’s a Saturday morning, much earlier than I usually wake up, and I’m joining Jorge Buendia’s Birding 101 Walk through Brushy Creek Lake P
Screwworm Cases Rise Across Texas • The Austin Chronicle (opens the original)
Read excerpt
On June 3, the first case of the New World screwworm (NWS) was discovered in La Pryor, Texas, infecting a three-week-old calf. Since then, screwworm cases have continued to gradually rise. As of July 22, 42 reported cases in cows, sheep, goats, and dogs have expanded throughout New Mexico and Texas – 41 of those reported in the Lone Star State. NWS are the larvae of the parasitic NWS fly, which burrows and eats the living flesh of warm-blooded animals. Screwworm flies lay eggs in the open wounds
