Cases of women undergoing unnecessary mastectomies are included in raft of failings by a North East breast cancer service. An internal review of the service at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT) has found hundreds of patients at the University Hospital of North Durham and Darlington Memorial Hospital came to harm. Of 514 cases examined so far, 315 patients have been found to have suffered harm, including 77 who suffered significant harm. One patient is known to have died.
