Read excerpt
PORTLAND (WGME) - In Cumberland County, there's a new initiative giving more criminal defendants a chance to make amends, without a conviction. It's called an early accountability program. It's billed as a way to get justice, head off repeat offenders and free up prosecutors for more violent crimes. Cumberland County District Attorney Jackie Sartoris hopes this approach can reduce recidivism in Maine. “What we want really is taking of the responsibility. That’s been shown to make a difference in

ProPublica reports a pro-Collins super PAC and her campaign took money from a government contractor in exchange for helping to steer millions of federal dollars their way. Her office calls these allegations “categorically false.” Roughly six years ago, also during a Collins re-election campaign, the former CEO of Navatek was arrested and charged for mak

Read excerpt
HARPSWELL (WGME) - A toxic algae bloom is shell-shocking the fishing industry in Midcoast Maine. State marine officials have closed parts of Casco Bay to shellfish harvesting, including Maquois Bay in Brunswick and the eastern side of Middle Bay in Harpswell. Clam diggers Robert Boyce and Chris Williams say the cove at Middle Bay where they dig clams has practically become a clam graveyard. “There’s not a live clam here. They’re all dead," Boyce said. The algal bloom is called Karenia mikimotoi.
