Signs of autumn as we weed and deadhead (and wait for more rain) (opens the original)

Mornings have felt decidedly autumnal this week. Deceptively sunny, but with a definite chill in the air, dewy grass (yes, the grass is growing again!) and that noticeably lower light. The evenings are drawing in fast and everything in the veg garden seems to have slowed down, from the tomatoes in the greenhouse to the courgettes outside. Still, it has been a lovely week for gardening, with plenty to do and warm, dry days making it a real pleasure to be outside. Certificate in Practical Horticul

Cooler weather brings a second spring and mixed fortunes for gardeners (opens the original)

There have been times this week when it felt positively autumnal, with much lower temperatures and even a whole day of rain! Meanwhile in the borders there seems to be a second spring, with more and more seedlings coming up and new leaves on some droughted perennials. Dahlias are finally beginning to flower and I think we are in for a very odd gardening month or two, with lots of plants recovering enough to flower but only for a very few weeks this late in the season. It will be very interesting

"September already! It felt as though the hot, dry days of summer would never end, and yet here we are, shifting into autumn. We all suspected it, but now it’s official: this has been the hottest summer on record. Still, the first days of September have felt like a lurch into a new season. As I write, the rain is falling, the wind is gusting, and brown leaves whip around—many from the horse chestnuts, which have looked prematurely autumnal for weeks." I wrote those words exactly a year ago and a

More rain would be great, but gardeners take anything we can get right now (opens the original)

It has been lovely to have a week of warm, but not crazily hot, temperatures and some rain. More rain would be great, but we’ll take anything we can get right now. The greenhouse and pots still need lots of watering, but we have eased up elsewhere. The rain won’t have made a huge difference to the moisture in the soil, but the lower temperatures mean the plants are losing less water and looking better already. I have continued to think about the plants which have struggled to survive, let alone

Which garden plants survived the summer heatwave and which must go? (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

    Read excerpt

Well, after a scorching end to last week, it has been a relief to have temperatures closer to those we used to think were normal in August and some actual rain. The ground is still parched and hard, and there are plenty of plants which have not survived and will not reappear next year. I have taken advantage of some downtime this month and spent a few days in my own sun-bleached and somewhat neglected garden.
