The aspen show may not be as resplendent as usual this year because of the heat and drought. The Bootleg Bottom area in Golden Gate Canyon State Park may be an exception. Rising mist and raindrop diamonds on spiderwebs and spruces made the South Boulder Creek Trail seem like a rainforest on an early morning walk in mid-July. Gray-green usnea moss hung from branches, transforming the woods into an enchanted forest where coralroot orchids poked out of the duff. Blue columbines, red paintbrushes and nodding sunflowers bloomed near the trailhead, and bog orchids, pink pyrola wintergreens and little-red-elephants bloomed in the wetlands a mile above.
