The rain has come and things have certainly perked up. The catch and cover crops are up in rows and looking reasonable. They should make a good cover before the winter shuts it down. Harvest seems to have been and gone in a flash. The going was dry to very dry, with underwhelming results – the straw yield was also closer to the pre-harvest predicted yields than the grain. Without long-term storage, the wheat is currently being loaded out and looks like it might scrap 7.5t/ha. Just. As crops dry down very suddenly, we live in hope they have built enough yield before the heat got to them. Grains look plump when you rub an ear out, so there is a chance it could still be a decent, early and dry harvest.
