Further calls have been made for extra cash for Teesside's police force after figures showed Middlesbrough was the most crime-hit area in the country. In the past year, there were 150 crimes per 1,000 people in Middlesbrough while the Cleveland Police area also had the highest murder rate in the country. Cleveland Police’s Head of Crime has said demands on policing, owing in part to Middlesbrough's "long‑standing demographic challenges", were being coupled with "limited funding and resourcing".

Over the past year, people living in the Teesside area were also most at risk of being murdered. There were 23,419 crimes in Middlesbrough over the past 12 months, translating to a crime rate of 150 crimes per 1,000 people. This is an increase of 1% compared to the previous year's figures.
