Column: One city, two teams and plenty of emotions after White Sox and Cubs split wild-card series (opens the original)
Read excerpt
The Cubs and White Sox clinched postseason spots two minutes apart Sept. 24, a crazy coincidence for the city rivals. On Wednesday the Sox advanced to the American League Division Series with a 7-3 win over the Houston Astros in their wild-card series, about three hours before the Cubs bowed out of their wild-card series with a 4-1 loss to the San Diego Padres. It was a night of rejoicing on the South Side, both for the Sox win and Cubs loss. Cubs fans generally don’t care about the Sox, so thei

HOUSTON — The Chicago White Sox made believers out of skeptics this season, going from three straight seasons of 100-plus losses to the 2026 postseason. And now they’re in the American League Division Series after sweeping the Houston Astros in a best-of-three wild-card series. Whether Pope Leo XIV had anything to do with it is anyone’s guess, but Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf didn’t need any more convincing. “I’m going to convert,” Reinsdorf said in the champagne-soaked visitors clubhouse at Daikin

(The games also aired on NBC Sports Network, which is carried by YouTube TV and part of some premium Comcast packages but not on the standard

But that’s one of the perks of being the Chicago White Sox, having the leader of the Catholic Church rooting for you at the Vatican as you begin your playoff quest after years of roaming in the baseball desert. The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees can have their Hollywood celebrities show up in the postseason to see and be seen. The Sox will try to mak

Read excerpt
HOUSTON — In a surprise move before the start of the wild-card series with the Houston Astros, the Chicago White Sox revealed a letter addressed to Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf from Pope Leo XIV. The letter, signed Leo PP XIV, informed Reinsdorf that the pope was pleased to receive Reinsdorf’s letter from the game on Aug. 11, which was when the Sox gave away pope hats to every fan in attendance at Rate Field to celebrate their most famous fan. Reinsdorf received the letter in the mail around 2 p.m.
