Read excerpt
Parents of children in a Cork special school are being “pushed, forced, or guilted” into accepting reduced timetables, TDs have been told. A number of parents from Carrigaline Community Special School and Dublin’s Belmayne Community Special School travelled to Leinster House yesterday to present TDs with their experiences, having accused the Government of attempting to “sweep” issues at the schools away. Both schools were established quickly in recent years in direct response to a lack of planne

The cocaine mothership MV Matthew, which was sold for after costing the State almost €17m to maintain and berth, could have been worth up to $3.9m (€3.36m) in scrap metal, according to a proposal document which was prepared by a British firm — but never presented to Revenue. The Panamanian-registered MV Matthew was at the centre of the State’s record cocaine seizure in September 2023. The 2.25-tonne seizure, valued at €157m, was also the largest in Europe that year. A final decision on the drug is expected to be made

Earlier this month, Taoiseach Micheál Martin intervened after An Coimisiún Pleanála upheld planning permission for the building of 106 apartments on the 60-acre site. Planning had initially been granted in February by Cork City Council after councillors had in 2022 approved the rezoning of swathes of Bessborough for residential dev

Read excerpt
The Cork Events Centre is “literally back at square one”, an Oireachtas committee has been told. At an Oireachtas housing committee, Cork City Council assistant chief executive Brian Geaney said the Government decision to re-tender the centre had led to a new competition and that several interested parties had been in contact. The sod for the centre was turned at the former Beamish and Crawford site by then taoiseach Enda Kenny in February 2016. However, the project has been stalled since then.
