High Points: Pizza nostalgia (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

It was 22 years ago today. Well, actually, on Sept. 30, 2004, the column below was published under the High Points moniker raving about a local institution: New York Pizza. At the time, it was the only New York Pizza in the valley. Opened not by New Yorkers but, rather, by a couple of Louisiana transplants, Earl Rodgers and Kevin Jones, entrepreneurs in their early 20s, it filled a niche above the Hyman Avenue Mall for a place that was affordable and fun. They made great pizza and sold a lot of

High Points: The season is on (opens the original)

Admit it. You were more than a little nervous. Right around 3:30 p.m. this past Sunday, the Jacksonville Jaguars kicked a field goal to take a 13-3 lead on your Denver Broncos on a cloudless day at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium. It was only a 10-point deficit, and the Broncos did win an NFL record tying one score games in 2025. Still, after the loss to the Kansas City Chiefs six days before on Monday Night Football, and the lack of any show of offensive might thus far in the season, things

It’s off-season. That time of year when Aspenites boogie to get out of Dodge for their post-summer, pre-winter getaways. Folks are scattering to the four corners of the earth — from Boston to Bhutan, Costa Rica to Vancouver and Dubai to Auckland. And that’s just the people I know. When I board an Aspen-Denver flight this time of year, it is often filled with locals making their way to places I have never heard of, much less plan on visiting. We are a traveling lot, we Roaring Forkers, and ther

High Points: 25 years on (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

    Read excerpt

It’s almost impossible to believe that a quarter century has passed since the day that will forever be known as 9/11. If you were alive then, the memories inevitably occupy a space in your soul. We will never forget. Twenty-five years ago this morning, we awoke to news that something very bad was happening in New York City. Initially, there was simply confusion as images came over the network morning shows (which were a big thing before social media) showing a plane had crashed into one of the b

High Points: Swooning for September (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

    Read excerpt

One of the best things about living here in Aspen is that one can make a legitimate case for each of the 12 months being the best month. If you were forced to pick a favorite month and wax poetic about it, you probably could pick any one of the dozen and have plenty to say. Or, in my case, write. I’m not sure that’s true in most places. Having said that, it is easy to pick my favorite page of the calendar, and we are on it right now. Yes, September, in my experienced opinion (I’ve see 69 of ’em)
