Pearman: Watching woodchucks - Red Deer Advocate (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Published 6:30 am Thursday, July 30, 2026 It has been my good fortune over the past few years to have seen and photographed a small mammal that is widespread yet uncommon in Alberta – the woodchuck. Also known as the groundhog, this interesting member of the squirrel family is most famous for its proclamation of spring on Feb. 2 each year (Groundhog Day). When a friend advised me that he had several woodchucks on his property west of Edmonton, I decided it would be worth a road trip to see them.
