I would like to thank The Californian for the special report by John Cox on Sept. 5: "We don't have any way to defend ourselves." This is a prime example of why local journalism is so important to our society. The federal government's policy of detaining immigrants, transporting them to detention facilities far from their homes and families, only to eventually release them into our local community with no way of returning to their families, is not only inhumane but directly impacts homelessness
