Spokane Poet Laureate Mery Noel Smith is helping young poets find their voices with the weekly Teen Poetry Workshop this summer. “It is designed to reach youth artists by removing as many barriers to access as possible,” Smith said. In partnership with Spokane Arts, Spark Central and the Kendall Yards Night Market, creative students earn $15 to perform on stage each week this summer, while also enjoying fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms. “In this equation, everyone wins,” Smith said.

Two Spokane authors have been named finalists for the 2026 Washington State Book Awards: Jess Walter and Leyna Krow.
