LAUREN GILGER: Arizona’s history is well documented through its newspapers, and our next guest dove deep into the long Spanish-language newspaper history here. ASU English professor Vanessa Fonseca-Chavez is out with a new article in the Journal of Arizona History about Spanish-language newspaper editor Lázaro Acosta, a Mexican-born teacher, writer, community leader and newspaper editor in Arizona and New Mexico during the territorial period. I spoke with Fonseca-Chavez more about it and how she

LAUREN GILGER: Today is the final day of the monsoon season, an iconic Arizona phenomenon that our next guest this morning loves to paint. Tina Roy’s monsoon paintings are big — often really big. She thinks the scale of the sky and the power of storms is important to illustrate. Roy grew up in the Valley but spent much of her life travelling the world before deciding to raise her kids here. The Oklahoma-based Fort Sill Apache Tribe recently bought 55 acres of land in the Dragoon Mountains in Southeastern Arizona. It is land that was taken away from them by President Ulysses S. Grant in the late 1800s, just years after they exchanged it for peace. The Arizona Daily Star’s Henry Brean has the story and is on the line now to tell us more. Good morning, Henry. LAUREN
