The old Stephenson Hotel in Kirksville was being demolished to make way for a parking lot. The City of Kirksville purchased the property from L. P. “Pete” Anesi owner. Kirksville’s first fire station building just to the north of the hotel in the northwest corner of the same block, was also being purchased by the city. According to an article in the Kirksville Daily Express, the Adair County schools which were opening were “the best in the state employing teachers of high educational standards and paying salaries that were the highest of any county in Northeast Missouri.” This situation was due in large measure to the supervision of Marion S. The Princess Theatre was being renovated and updated. During the face uplifting process, the tile canopy roof was being removed and replaced with a modern type roof. The square tower corners were being torn down to be level with the rest of the building.
