IDEA ALLEY: Chicken and rice isn’t Arkansas’ official dish, but it should be | Arkansas Democrat Gazette (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

    Read excerpt

Recipes that appear in Idea Alley have not been tested by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. While looking for inspiration for this week's column, I was reminded September is National Chicken Month and National Rice Month. And as every Arkansan (or Arkansawyer, if you prefer) knows, chicken and rice are our foods. Arkansas is the top (or near the top) producer of both so it's only fitting to devote a column to our unofficial state dish: chicken and rice. I have edited these lightly for clarity and t

FRONT BURNER | OPINION: Pinto Bean Cakes With Avocado Salsa | Arkansas Democrat Gazette (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

FRONT BURNER | OPINION: Impossible Mexican Pie is a taste of 1980s nostalgia | Arkansas Democrat Gazette (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

    Read excerpt

My mind is swimming with old recipes these days, thanks to hours upon hours spent perusing the Democrat-Gazette's collective recipe archives. Between searching for my own lost recipes and researching for readers, I've spent more time digging through old recipe files -- figurative and physical -- than I have in the kitchen recently. (Not that I'm complaining. With temperatures soaring to 100 degrees and my house A/C struggling to keep up, the kitchen is the second-to-last place I want to be right
