To Your Good Health: RA patient hasnât found a medication that alleviates joint pain (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, but my rheumatologist hasnât been helpful in finding a medication that Iâm not allergic to for alleviating joint pain. I seem to be allergic to most meds that Iâve tried. Iâm only 68. I saw the phrase âbiological medicationâ for RA in one of your recent columns. What is this, and do you have any advice? RA is an autoimmune disease that may affect other organs besides the joints, including the heart and lungs. While initial treatment for RA m

To Your Good Health: Weakness and more persist in woman after gallbladder removal (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I have a friend who had gallstones and ultimately got her gallbladder removed. When they went in, they saw lots of infections, cleaned her out and put drains in her liver. Sheâs been feeling awful and weak, and she wants to get a second opinion. Which type of specialist should she see? Treatment for a complex problem like hers often takes a team of specialists â in this case, certainly a surgeon and very likely a gastroenterologist and an infectious disease specialist. The ideal person to se
