Portland art exhibit contrasts 2 artists with a shared language in color | Column (opens the original)

Hot on the heels of the Impressionist and post-Impressionist movements in France, the painter Paul Sérusier founded Les Nabis, an almost devotional brotherhood of Symbolists who believed that usual modes of articulation and understanding had greater underlying powers that were elusive to most people (read: anyone who lacked the depth of what they perceived as their own spiritual profundity). Sérusier and fellow Nabis painters — Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, Édouard Vuillard and others — determi
Fall art exhibits lean into retrospectives (opens the original)

Autumn this year is apparently a time for retrospectives. Many, though not all, museums in the state are focusing their curatorial energies on revisiting, reappraising — and at times recontextualizing — the work of individual artists. The most comprehensive, arguably, is the doubleheader on Carl Sprinchorn, which began at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art in early August and continues through November 1 and overlaps with another Sprinchorn retrospective at Bates College Museum of Art (Oct. 1 t

Recently I’ve reviewed shows in Ellsworth, North Haven, Rockland, Rockport, South Portland, Thomaston and Vinalhaven. It’s been a blast crisscrossing the state, but, as Dorothy discovered in “The Wizard of Oz,” there’s no place like home. And just in time too, as there are some very vibrant things happening here (the extraordinary Homer exhibition at the PMA is up next). Today I look at six exhibitions spread across two galleries — some would say three, since two (Greenhut and Cove Street) are a
Plenty of art exhibits worth the ferry ride across Midcoast Maine | Column (opens the original)

One of my favorite summer pleasures is island hopping off Midcoast Maine. Every August, I visit friends on Vinalhaven and North Haven, home to galleries — New Era on the former, Hopkins Wharf, the IceHouse on the latter — that hold interesting shows we look at today. To get there, of course, we embark on ferries from Rockland, so I am also including two small exhibitions at Caldbeck Gallery worth seeing, though, of course, there are multiple galleries and museums in Rockland worth visiting. 12 E
