It’s the complaint of our times that “things are not working any more.” The list is endless: NHS waiting times, school performance, waste recycling, housing, ferries, air traffic control, drug rehab, potholes, the transition to renewables. The basic problem is government “austerity,” or better put, a mismatch between what people expect from their public services and what they are prepared to pay for through taxation. Bowls of thin soup, smelling good, but containing nothing but a few nuggets of crowd-pleasing hand-outs. They both shied away from the big issues of our times – meaningful employment for young people, money and reform for the NHS and the care services, proper funding for education a

It was dry, sunny a lot of the time and the coolest place in red-hot Europe. The grass was actually green. So the clattering circus of music, theatre, dance, comedy, book reading and military tattooing could spread itself into the streets. Visitors sat in T-shirts at pavement cafés as if they were in Paris or Milan or Buenos Aires. It was most unlike Auld Reekie, where the sea-haar and the chilly east wind can spoil the party. The only spoiler this time was the closure of Princes Street due to a
