Living Less Unsustainably: Decking (opens the original)

Hi all, Climate Master John Fischer here with KLCC's Living Less Unsustainably. A cedar deck can be a beautiful and useful addition to your home. I have built several for myself and friends or family over the years. I will never build another. My recently replaced deck was almost 40-years-old, and contained many boards that were 200 years old - the lumber likely came from trees that were 400 years old. 40 year use, and 400 years to replace the materials - that is the definition of unsustainable.

Hi All, Lane County Extension Service Master Gardener John Fischer here with KLCC's Good Gardening. My garden produces a lot of food. Fortunately, I have friends to take excess produce off my hands - this year it has been peaches and zucchini. And I have thousands of volunteers to help get rid of peels, rotten fruit, overgrown zucchini and the like. The black soldier fly larvae is a great critter to find in your composter. But people are often worried the first time they see it because fly larva
Good Gardening: Smooth (opens the original)

Knowing what you're missing can be a better motivator for putting in a new plant than thinking about it in the off season. The raspberries and blackberries are succulent and prolific this season, and there are varieties that will stop the spreading, and provide fruit without thorns that can be put in this fall — or early next spring if you prefer the lower cost of bare root plants. My favorite blackberry is thornless - truly thornless - produces large fruit, and is thornless. No more wincing dur
