In Lebanon, a U.S.-brokered plan for Lebanese forces to assume security there appears to be faltering. NPR's Jane Arraf and Jawad Rizkallah went to the first and, so far, only pilot zone in the south where Hezbollah was driven out. Israeli troops withdrew and the Lebanese Army moved in, allowing some residents to return. JANE ARRAF, BYLINE: We're waiting at a Lebanese Army checkpoint to be allowed into the village of Zawtar al-Gharbiyah. UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: (Non-English language spoken). ARR

U.S. military forces formally left Iraq today. That marks a new era in that Middle East nation that has suffered so much bloodshed for decades. This was not the first U.S. military withdrawal from the country.

This was not the first U.S. military withdrawal from the country. U.S. forces pulled out in 2011, declaring their mission over amid mounting Iraqi political opposition to the presence of U.S. troops. Three years later, the Iraqi gove

A historic milestone in Iraq this week - U.S. forces are withdrawing after a two-decade-long military presence that began with the invasion of Iraq that toppled dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003. It's a very different Iraq than the country the U.S. entered and a different America. NPR's Jane Arraf has been reporting from Iraq since the 1990s and joins us from Amman. Hi, Jane. First, tell us what's happening this week. JANE ARRAF, BYLINE: Well, by Wednesday, the U.S. will have pulled out all the fo
