Aug. 9 marks the 52nd anniversary of the resignation of Richard Nixon, the longest span in American history when an unexpected change in the presidency has not occurred. Although the sample size is small it may be instructive, especially for Republicans, to recognize Nixon’s resignation came three months prior to a midterm election that, like the one on our horizon, held all the earmarks of being a wipeout for the president’s party, a result that would have inevitably compounded his difficulties
