The next Vinyl Vault will feature a swinging reed session with Bob Wilber and Kenny Davern, both on soprano saxophone and clarinet, on a live recording, “Soprano Summit.” The album was recorded live at the Concord Summer Festival on July 30, 1976, just over 50 years ago. The album was released on the Concord Jazz label in 1978. Ray Brown joined Wilber and Davern on bass, Marty Grosz on guitar, and Jake Hanna on drums. The set included some original compositions as well as a Duke Ellington cover.

The next Vinyl Vault will feature music from Czechoslovakia, a country that no longer exists! The band is Martin Kratochvíl & Jazz Q. The album is “Elegy,” recorded in 1976 in Prague, in what is now the Czech Republic. The album is a good example of mid-1970s European jazz rock. The band’s leader, Martin Kratochvíl, started his first jazz band in 1964, exploring many types of jazz, including free jazz. By 1970, Kratochvíl began to move the band, Jazz Q, into more of a jazz rock fusion direction.
