Museum Musings: Bits and Pieces 1946 - Prince Albert Daily Herald (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I often run across information which I find of interest, but find that there is insufficient content from which to write a complete column. The best way for me to share such information is to write a column including these bits and pieces. The first year after the end of the Second World War, 1946, was a pivotal year for the City of Prince Albert, and some of the bits and pieces of information I have gleaned from that year follow. One of the biggest national stories from 1946 followed the defect
Museum Musings: Central Avenue Confectioneries - Prince Albert Daily Herald (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I recently came across an article detailing the renovation in the summer of 1951 of Mills Brothers, a confectionery on Central Avenue. This brought back memories of similar shops which existed on Central when I was a youth. There were three of them, Central Fruit and Candy Kitchen (later Frank’s), Amos Cigar Store (later also Frank’s), and Mills Brothers. Museum Musings: The Avenue Hotel Fire - Prince Albert Daily Herald (opens the original)
Read excerpt
It was, according to Prince Albert’s fire chief, Alf Turner, the worst fire in Prince Albert since the 1947 fire which had destroyed St. Patrick’s Orphanage. A neighbouring structure, the Starland Theatre, had been built in 1911, with suites on the upper floors. When the Starland Theatre closed, it had been renovated, incorporating
Museum Musings: some Exhibition history - Prince Albert Daily Herald (opens the original)
Read excerpt
The Exhibition has rolled around once more, as it does every year. Well, not quite every year. The first summer fair, or exhibition, held under the auspices of what is now known as the Prince Albert Exhibition Association, occurred in 1884. Every year since then, there has been an exhibition, or fair, with the exception of 1895. And although there was no exhibition that year, it was still a red-letter year for the local Society. In 1881, the Governor General of Canada made a tour of western Cana
Museum Musings: The Strand and other theatres - Prince Albert Daily Herald (opens the original)
Read excerpt
My friend Larry from up Second Avenue recently sent me photographs of carpeting which exists in the North Star Trophy building. Back in 1968, when that building housed The Strand Theatre, Larry was an usher. He remembers the carpet from those days, and he wondered if I could provide some history about the building. Any history of The Strand Theatre cannot stand alone. The story of other early theatres in Prince Albert needs to be told alongside it. So, briefly, here is the story of early theatre
