I've learned to love Star Wars Zero Company's permadeath – by letting the new hires die (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Star Wars Zero Company is a great turn-based tactics game and probably the best way to dip your toes into the genre besides Marvel's Midnight Suns. Moreover, the much-discussed permadeath mechanic isn't as scary as you've been led to believe... if you play your cards right. By cards I mean operators, the literal lifeblood of Zero Company. While you can get through the game using only authored characters, that's an approach that, at least during a first playthrough, puts them at unnecessary risk.
The Blood of Dawnwalker's lack of stealth makes this Witcher 3-like feel incomplete (opens the original)
Read excerpt
I'm not done with The Blood of Dawnwalker yet, but so far, I think it's a hell of an RPG that has its own voice while still feeling a little familiar. The limitations of Rebel Wolves' first dark fantasy action RPG are obvious, but easy to accept when The Witcher 3's pedigree permeates the whole thing. It's sorely missing a stealth system, though. The betst open-world games needn't allow players to sneak around just because, but having actual stealth mechanics might be useful when you're roleplay
Elden Ring on Switch 2 might be my new go-to version of the action-RPG from now on (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Elden Ring remains one of the most important and best RPGs of the decade and it's easy to talk me into replaying it. This made a new journey to the Lands Between on Nintendo Switch 2 enticing before I'd even touched the port. While early reports last year weren't exactly encouraging, I trusted FromSoftware to take its time and eventually deliver a conversion worthy of an Elden Lord. After a more convincing showing in early 2026, we hoped for the best. Ahead of The Duskbloods' launch on Switch 2,
Oblivion Remastered on Switch 2 is a miracle port – and a reminder the RPG still isn't fixed (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Bethesda has been on a roll with its Nintendo Switch 2 ports despite Skyrim's troubled (but now fixed) version in late 2025. Fallout 4 was a stunner with several performance options, and MachineGames' Indiana Jones and the Great Circle – a current-gen beauty with unique challenges – also made the jump successfully. Now, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered has managed to surprise me as well, despite enduring hiccups tarnishing the overall experience. Below its shiny Unreal Engine 5 surface,
Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced proves open-world games were already the perfect size 13 years ago (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced has been a massive (and much-needed) success for Ubisoft, even if that hasn't stopped the publisher from laying off a number of its devs. Looking at the player reactions, it's evident longtime fans of the series were ready for a return to the series' pre-RPG roots. Understanding where open-world games are right now is impossible without studying what happened in the early 2010s. Skyrim proved density trumps raw size and that immersive sim elements are the key
