In Defense of the Side Quest • The Austin Chronicle (opens the original)
Read excerpt
On September 22 at 7:05pm, we officially said goodbye to summer. Unofficially, however, Texas summer is like a toxic ex who insists on lingering far past their welcome until everyone involved is exhausted. Here in Austin, the turn of the season is not marked by crisp weather or changing leaves (that time will come), but by an aggressive campaign from the pumpkin spice lobbyists, an influx of out-of-towners for Austin City Limits, and the determination to break out a flannel button-down, sweat be
Finding the Cosmic Groove • The Austin Chronicle (opens the original)

They say you should never mix business and family. Brothers Chris and Brian Gilbert soundly ignored this advice when they founded Cosmic Cowboy Smoke Shop. From the outside, the shop evokes the Southwestern Pueblo architecture you might find in New Mexico. “We didn’t want to look like a smoke shop from the outside,” Chris told me. “I was really big into the idea of having it kind of plain on the outside so that when you walk through the door there’s kind of a shock almost.” When I stepped throug
Choosin’ Texas • The Austin Chronicle (opens the original)

Pumpkin-themed drinks and fall decorations have already started to appear in local shops, but the scorching temperature tells me it’s decidedly still summer as I make my way down a dusty road in East Austin toward the HOPE Outdoor Gallery for the Save Texas Hemp Rally: a fundraiser for the future of hemp in Texas. The flyer promised a night of music, art, community, and advocacy and an invitation to “come meet the people fighting for the continued legality of hemp.” My Subaru told me it was 109°

Multiple cannabinoids have been banned statewide, including Delta-8, Delta-10, THCA, and THCP. Delta-9 is the last man standing, remaining legal as long as it is under 0.3% by dry weight in products, which is why you can still find edibles and drinks at your local head shop. Now that smokables are officially out, let’s talk about the real difference between inges
Runner’s High • The Austin Chronicle (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Two things I am: a stoner and a runner. One thing I am not: a morning person. And to be clear, I don’t typically combine the first two activities. I’ve seen the trend on social media: fitness influencers taking a high-dose gummy before a long run. I gave it a try once, but I found that it made my run feel even more laborious, and the Texas heat even more unbearable. I ended up stopping at a convenience store on my walk home and buying a Gatorade and a straw hat adorned with a Texas flag ribbon.
