‘A complete mystery’: horse found with 10cm rubber-coated hook embedded in his hindquarters (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Vets are pondering the “complete mystery” as to how a smooth, rubber-coated 10cm metal hook managed to embed itself in the hindquarters of a former racehorse. Mary Framptom-Price found what appeared to be a relatively minor wound on her 20-year-old thoroughbred Baz but Keesjan Cornelisse of VetPartners’ Penbode Equine Vets had a feeling from the photo Mary sent in that it might be deeper than it seemed. The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in the US has been conducting a live clinical trial using histotripsy. The technique uses focused ultrasound waves to a targeted area. This creates microscopic “bubble clouds” from gases in tumour tissues; the bubbles form and collapse in microseconds, creating forces that destroy cancer cells. Virginia Tech bio
‘It can be soul-destroying’: support and awareness needed for those grieving the loss of a beloved horse (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Grief for a horse can be taken less seriously than that for pets, it is feared, meaning many owners can feel “isolated and unsupported during their time of loss”. The RSPCA’s “Not just a pet” campaign aims to raise awareness of grief for animals, and a recent survey conducted by the charity found that 70.5% of respodents feel a stigma exists; only 5.5% of respondents believe pet grief is taken as seriously as it should be. “And there are concerns that many people misunderstand the role horses pl
