A year ago, the City of Johannesburg’s (“the City”) politicians and officials intimidated informal traders around Johannesburg Park Station and eventually removed them, claiming they were trading unlawfully. SERI has been representing them since 2013, and evictions happen every few years. This is partially because the City’s politicians do not fully accept or understand the role played by informal trading in our metro and individual households. I remember that we dispatched a letter to the City

Later that day, I shared this with Dr Mnqobi Ngubane. I was curious about Mkhwanazi, as I had been invited to join the meeting after the open letter published about the Nkambule family. Dr Ngubane

“The South African Student Movement stressed black self- reliance and taking care of your own business and honouring what you are and what you have and taking responsibility for what you can do and can become.” I cried as I read the press release announcing MARIKANA STILL…….FONTEIN at the Market Theatre on 22 August 2026 at 19:30. Of course, in August, we are forced to face the “fungibility of Black lives” as articulated in the press release. Often it is bandied about without “a call to reclaim
