JJ 09/96: Julian Arguelles - Home Truths - Jazz Journal (opens the original)

Thirty years ago, Mark Gilbert thought the quality of soloists Arguelles and Mike Walker did much to offset any shortfall in the repertoire department. First published in Jazz Journal September 1996 Although all the members of this quartet can swing with authority, Arguelles has chosen in this record, like other young British players, to pursue an abstract reading of folk and blues music which is reminiscent of Keith Jarrett’s highly-strung folk-jazz-gospel amalgams of the late sixties and ear

The band is, however, augmented by another sol

Forty years ago, Mark Gilbert found the work of the distinguished theorist and composer teetering under the weight of its pretensions. First published in Jazz Journal August 1986 It’s difficult not to see some yawning flaws in such an ambitious and bravely pretentious work as this. Russell has stretched so far in both conceptual and musical terms that he was almost bound to topple over, but luckily for him, he falls on his feet. The concept (as in the ‘concept albums’ beloved of so many rock t

Sixty years ago, Graham Boatfield said this then six-year-old session no longer matched its title. First published in Jazz Journal August 1966 I am not sure if the intention is to mislead, but this six-year old recording, although it may well have been the ‘avant garde’ of its day, certainly could not wear that coat today. To indicate that it is not in fact the latest thing is perhaps to do it a favour. It represents the work of some major musicians who have gone their own way since that time. C
