Wildflower hikes in Crested Butte: Oh-Be-Joyful Trail to Blue Lake (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Oh-Be-Joyful is a great name for the Crested Butte area and this beautiful place. Many families come for the camping and the river that runs through the campground at the trailhead. The trail is also popular because of its wildflowers and waterfalls. The trailhead has bathrooms and signs. One sign even explains, in depth, why there are cows in the area. When you’re ready to hike, look for a sign that says "bridge and trail." As you walk through part of the campground expect to see people sitting
Wildflower hikes in Breckenridge: Black Powder Pass on Boreas Pass (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Boreas Pass near Breckenridge is probably best known for vibrant colors in the fall, but it’s also a great place to find wildflowers in the summer. As you drive to the trailhead, you may see flowers on the side of the road and in meadows when the forest opens up. Paid parking at the trailhead runs $10 to $55, depending on when you hike. However, parking is free for shuttle riders at the "South Gondola Parking Garage" in Brecken

In the Denver metro area, we are lucky to have several wilderness areas nearby — Indian Peaks, Mount Evans, Lost Creek and James Peak. The James Peak Wilderness protects 15 lakes and more than 20 miles of pristine, backcountry trail. The Crater Lakes area features five lakes, three lower ones and two higher ones, all just below the Continental Divide. The hike starts at the East Portal of the Moffat Tunnel. That’s a mouthful, but the trailhead is actually next to a railroad tunnel that goes thro
Hiking in southeast Colorado: Vogel Canyon near La Junta (opens the original)
Read excerpt
When you think of hiking in Colorado, you likely think of mountains or the foothills, but southeastern Colorado has trails full of history like Picketwire Canyon, Crack Cave, the Santa Fe Trail and Vogel Canyon. Vogel Canyon has homesteading ruins and petroglyphs. The Vogel Canyon Trail starts at the Vogel Canyon Picnic Area, about 17 miles south of La Junta. The trailhead has picnic tables, a bathroom, and signs about the trails in the area. We decided to do a loop of the Canyon, Prairie, and O
