HARNESS RACING: No-one beats Moet 17 times! (opens the original)
Read excerpt
A TENNIS parallel to begin this week: in the late 1970s, the big-serving American/Lithuanian Vitas Gerulaitas kept coming up against the petulant Jimmy Connors, who had a more complete game. In fact, Connors beat Gerulaitas 16 times until the underdog beat him in straight sets in the Masters Cup of 1980. Gerulaitis gave the press one of the all-time great sporting quotes, when he said: “And let that be a lesson to you all: no-one beats Vitas Gerulaitus 17 times”.

QUALITY rather than quantity was the order of the day at Annaghmore last Saturday. The Irish Harness Racing Association juvenile series, funded by The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and administered by Horse Sport Ireland, is an unwieldly meeting title but all the parties deserve great credit. Over €80,000 in prize money was on the card. The sponsorship has achieved the desired effect of increasing the breeding of pacers in Ireland.

THE European Apprentice Championships were an unqualified success at Dundalk. Even the harshest critics would have to concede that the harness racers brought colour and atmosphere to the modern complex. Obviously, the hometown guy (well Skibbereen to be exact) winning helped a lot. However, it was gratifying to see during the week that the runner-up Adria Riera Vaquer of Spain and the third-placed Daniel Debono of Malta shared photos of their placed efforts on social media in their homelands, a
HARNESS RACING: Southern drivers lay down the law at new Cork circuit (opens the original)
Read excerpt
LAST Sunday saw the second meeting at the new Lyre Raceway near Clonakilty in Co Cork. The trotting community were able to get a proper look around the transformed facility without the distraction of 21 races and a visiting French delegation. The track was funded by the Government Sports Capital Grant Scheme. Happily, there are some talented young drivers coming through in Munster, Leinster and Ulster at the moment. Two young men from the Southern region drove a double apiece, namely Eoin Murphy
