On the Water: Beginning of fall brings cooler weather for fishing (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

    Read excerpt

Heading into the weekend, anglers experienced cooler weather as we welcome the first week of fall. The front brought several days with a stiff breeze, and a full moon brought strong tides. Anglers looking for a sea trout dinner found success throughout the Pine Island Sound from Galt Island north to the Rocky Channel, at the north end of the Matlacha Pass near marker 72, and in the Charlotte Harbor west of Bokeelia. Trout up to 20 inches took top water lures and soft paddle tails around potholes

On the Water: Another week of typical summer fishing (opens the original)

Another week of hot summer weather yielded good fishing for some anglers and a struggle for others. The seatrout bite has been off the past week or so around many areas of the Sound and Matlacha Pass. With an outgoing tide for much of the day, the better bite was early morning at the top of the tide. Grass bottom in 5 to 8-foot depths off Bokeelia gave up a few seatrout plus Spanish mackerel, ladyfish and small blacktip sharks. A few pompano were caught while drifting shrimp under a float for tr

    Excerpt · English

As we are in the heat of summer, the better fishing reports came during the first half of the day, then slowed after noon. Offshore, the bite could turn on anytime, yet inshore after the water heated up mid-day, it was often a slow bite. Limits of mangrove snapper were reported inshore, around the Gulf passes, and a short distance offshore. Fish up to 16 inches were caught in the passes with the better bite over the slower and slack tides. Anglers found concentrations of snapper over open water

On the Water: Take advantage of conditions in August (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

    Read excerpt

Fishing or boating around the islands in August means dealing with hot days and thunderstorms. Fishing can be good, and often without much competition, if you plan your day to take advantage of conditions. If you just want to have fun and a little fishing while relaxing, then the beaches are a good choice, especially if you are fishing with the family. Good numbers of snook are roaming the surf throughout the summer and are a sight fishermen’s dream. Most snook are running 22-26 inches, but ther

On the Water: Week end’s weather disrupts fishing (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

    Read excerpt

The weather was good over the first half of the week, then a disturbance in the Gulf brought stormy weather heading into the weekend. Fishing was good at times, slow at times and unpredictable from day to day, but that’s normal for summer fishing. On days that weather conditions allowed, American red snapper were caught in depths starting at 150 feet. Anglers report that the deeper the water the bigger the snapper. Red snapper season is winding down as season is closed through month of August. R
