Repeat After Me: ‘SSI and Social Security Are Not the Same - Garden City News (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Neutral tone

I can tell from my emails that it’s time for me to trot out another version of my “SSI and Social Security Are Not the Same Thing” column. Despite my preaching over the years, I continue to get emails from readers getting Social Security benefits that say things like this: “My wife and I are getting SSI. And we would like to ask you some questions.” Or this: “My SSI check is $2,140 per month. My wife’s SSI check is $1,800. Can she get any of my SSI?” Today I got an email from a woman who said th

The Most Insignificant Social Security Benefit (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

    Read excerpt

I’m always amazed that the most insignificant of all Social Security benefits seems so significant to so many people. I am talking about the crummy little one-time $255 death benefit. Bad Husbands and Social Security (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

    Read excerpt

I’ve talked about the issue of bad husbands and Social Security before. But if my emails are any indication, there still are a lot of rotten husbands out there! That’s why I keep telling my wife she should fall down on her knees every day and thank her lucky stars that she got one of the good guys. OK, I really don’t do that. In fact, if I did say that to my wife, the only reason she might drop to her knees is that she'd be laughing so hard she wouldn’t be able to keep standing! But I can’t help

Meet Tom, Dick, and Harry (opens the original)

Excerpt · Neutral tone · English

    Read excerpt

There is no question I am asked more frequently than this one: “When should I file for my Social Security?' And then they will frequently follow that up with these additional questions: ”Should I take it at 62? Or wait until my full retirement age?“ And others will add one more age to the mix.
