Getting history straight during trip to Europe (opens the original)

When I write one of these, it's like sewing a rug. I take a bunch of ideas and stitch them together till I have a column that I can shake outside and put on the floor. Today, I have a lot of loose ends. These are remnants from our trip to Europe in June. Instead of rug, it might come out looking like a bunch of rags. We spent a week in the Czech Republic and a week in Poland with two daughters, a son-in-law, and a 10-year-old grandson. Part of that was seeking ancestral places. Part of it was to

For 90 years, summers in Sleepy Eye followed the rhythms of the Del Monte factory on the west end of town. Sights, sounds, and smells that everyone knew ebbed and flowed through the pea and sweet corn canning seasons. Now the lot that saw trucks and employees busily crisscrossing sits empty. Weeds grow from the cracks. The conveyors that carried ears of corn into the plant sit quiet, rusting. A thing that comes with age is increased interest in those who came before. I wish I had asked my parents so many more questions about their lives. Our daughter Abby spent time doing ancestry work on both Pam's and my side. Others have worked on the Krzmarzicks. Everyone's work can build on others' on websites like ancestry.com. Writing a column isn't usually physically challenging. Unless you count wracking my brain. Sometimes I pull a muscle in my cerebellum. Today I'm having to work at this. Wednesday morning, I had carpal tunnel surgery on my right wrist. I wasn't sure if I would be able to type after that. But here I am, plunking away with a giant, clompy wrap around my right hand. Credit to Tylenol. My post-op instructions mention no strenuous activity for that hand. I'm not sure writing counts as strenuous. Findi

I have followed the World Series since 1965; the year the Dodgers beat our Twins. I was 9. As I got older, I realized the "World" Series isn't really the world. The World Cup is the world, the entire world. Right now, here in the middle of the continent, the World Cup surrounds us. There are matches north, south, east, and west of us. Soccer is "football" to the rest of the planet. Here in America, we give that name to that other, more violent game we watch on Friday nights, Saturday afternoons,
