I remember discovering that her hair wasn’t real and I was confused. I asked my father about wigs. He said something like—they do that in show business. That made sense to me. In my 20s, I started listening to her music a lot, partly because my friend Katie Hogan was also a big fan and she rekindled my Dolly light.

I emailed the Beach 91st Street Community Garden group for our monthly update and mentioned that there were so many herbs, particularly parsley, ready for picking in our communal herb bed. One of our new gardeners, Jim, responded saying, “I saw a black swallowtail butterfly in the garden,” and linked to information about how their larvae love parsley! At the Beach 91st Street Community Garden’s Spring Plant Sale, back in May, Erin Mulholland, Native Plant Nursery Manager at RISE, stopped by and brought with her organic flint corn seeds. Erin generously shared enough seeds for everyone. Many of our gardeners planted them, including me. And then poof! We have a maize of tall stalks popping up all over the garden. Growing corn is a first for me. To be honest, I barely planted my seeds. I poked them into the soil haphaz

The night of the big sandstorm in mid-July, I was at Rippers. Real Young & Lazy Horse was playing (@realyounglazyhorse). The wind suddenly picked up in fury! Within minutes, the sand was swirling, and the sky had turned to sand. It poured. Someone suggested taking cover on my porch, the closest refuge, so we all made a run for it. It turned into one of those impromptu porch hangs that always seem to be better than planned parties. As the night went on, the conversation got weird, as late-night c
