The stretched celestial dragon (opens the original)

I have mixed feelings about this time of year, with autumn underway. I really love summer, but every year it seems to go faster and faster. Still, the star-watching nut in me loves this time of year because I can get to my telescope and astronomical camera earlier in the evening, so I don’t have to walk around the next day in a sleep-deprived funk, clutching my deeply charged-up coffee. Watching the stars on these cooler October evenings is such a relaxing and great way to unwind after a long da

October Autumn stargazing at its best, with a touch of summer (opens the original)

Excerpt · Positive tone · English

October is such a wonderful time of year for stargazing over Butler. Nights are longer and offer great constellations, planets and other celestial treasures. Your Sky Guide app is going to get quite a workout. Treat yourself and lie back on a reclining lawn chair to take it all in. The dark skies of the countryside are best, but even city skies can put on a great show. There is so much to see in October. The headlining planet is Saturn, which reaches its closest approach to Earth early in the mo

Even though we’re in the closing weeks of summer, the great, but faint, constellation Hercules the Hero is still with us, hanging upside down high in the early evening western Butler sky. It’s certainly not the brightest of constellations, but Hercules is one of my favorites, mainly because of its great story and a great star cluster that lies within it. Hercules is supposed to outline the figure of a mighty hero in Greek mythology, but to me it looks more like a giant fancy handwritten capital

A tiny crown, or a celestial smile (opens the original)

Across the celestial dome over Butler, through the course of the year, big and bright constellations like Orion the Hunter and Scorpius the Scorpion cross the sky, and they’re wonderful to gaze upon, but personally, I’ve always liked diminutive, yet distinct, constellations. One of them is Corona Borealis, the “Northern Crown,” visible in the evening sky since spring, but now, in late summer, beginning its long goodbye in the early evening western sky. There’s still plenty of time to see it thou

September nights are expanding (opens the original)

Excerpt · Neutral tone · English

    Read excerpt

Butler summer stargazing can be so comfortable! However, for many folks with Monday-through-Friday jobs, early wake-up calls restrict extended nights under the stars to the weekends. In September though, nightfall begins much earlier, especially toward the end of the month. Along with that, there are still plenty of comfortable evenings in September. The summer constellations still dominate the early evening sky with the “Summer Triangle” dazzling nearly overhead as soon as evening twilight ends
