Whatever happened to “hello?” (opens the original)
Read excerpt
There was a time when a ringing telephone meant something. Someone wanted you. The phone rang in the kitchen and everybody heard it. If you were a teenager, you might sprint 100 miles an hour from another room to get there before your mother did. There was no caller ID. No advance warning. You picked it up and took your chances. "Hello?" It might be your grandmother. It might be your best friend. It might be someone asking your father to buy aluminum siding. But you answered. It was actually exc
The World Is A Different Place: A Week In Peru (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Progress is evident everywhere. My husband's company has just joined the United Nation's efforts to implement green strategies into their business model and they've announced they're hiring a storyteller. We're not sure what kind of stories the storyteller will tell, but my husband's just glad he'll be retired by the time he's forced to listen. He just wants to work. He doesn't have time for stories. I have my own stories to tell. I was recently in Peru for a week and I've noticed some profound
Uncomfortable questions arise in Sandusky case (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Dredging up the Sandusky trial and the allegations that led to his conviction is among the least comfortable things I've ever written about. But I've been shocked--although perhaps not entirely surprised--by some

Read excerpt
Jerry Sandusky has withdrawn the portion of his pending post-conviction petition based on the recantation of a man identified at his 2012 trial as Victim 10. While Sandusky has withdrawn his portion of the petition, a notice received Friday by the Pennsylvania court system states the hearing is still on. The hearing is limited to examining Victim 10's recantation and the circumstances surrounding it and will be heard by Judge Maureen Skerda, retired Court of Common Pleas judge in Warren County.
Where have all the bugs gone? (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Have you noticed there aren't many bugs around? What fascinates me most about the disappearance of insects is how quietly it happened. There was no particular summer when we walked outside and announced that the bugs were gone. There was no funeral for the moths around the porch light. Nobody held a memorial service for the bugs that used to splatter against our windshields. I used to run around our lawn on Chautauqua Lake growing up catching lightning bugs in mason jars. We had fly strips hangi
