Some concerning statements were quoted in the front page OBSERVER article of Sept. 15, “District in red, open to talks with the city.” North County Water District Chairman Dan Pacos was quoted as saying that the NCWD has lost $150k in the fiscal year through August. Pacos was also quoted questioning SUNY Professor Peter Reinelt's formula for calculating the water rates that Dunkirk charges the NCWD and that are then up-charged to water customers. This is not the first time that Pacos has questio

Positive efforts at water plant prove a point (opens the original)

It may seem odd to some people that I am complimenting Fredonia Trustee Paul Wandel on his efforts in overseeing operations at the village's water treatment plant. I have been critical in this column of Wandel's support of the village's current plan to join the North County Water District. Trump and his pals point out that during his administration President Barack Obama changed the name of Mount McKinley back to its traditional Alaskan Native Name, Mount Denali. T

It was encouraging to watch the Monday, Aug. 24 Village Board workshop on YouTube. Kudos to Trustees Tim Mulholland, Christine Cruz-Keefe and LeeAnn Lazarony for voicing their support to reinstate the public comment sessions at Fredonia village board meetings. Mayor Michael Ferguson and Trustees Paul Wandel and Ben Brauchler continue to push their tired old chestnut that public comment should remain suspended for "safety reasons" while masking their real reason for suspending public comment from

The more things change, the more they stay the same (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

    Read excerpt

In the spring of 2010 I arrived home from work to find my street lined with small orange flags, the type of which usually indicate some sort of digging soon to take place. The flags were quite curious to me since Ryan Place had only been established a few years prior and our street seemed to have all the necessary infrastructure already in place. What could anyone be digging along the entire south side of the street and right in front of our three year old house? I reached out to a contact I had
