Ben Fields: Don't do us any favors by ushering in apocalypse (Opinion) (opens the original)
Read excerpt
The late columnist and humorist Lewis Grizzard once wrote that he didn't understand hunting, especially concerning the argument from hunters that they are doing a good thing by curtailing the overpopulation of deer. "But if I'm a deer, I don't want anyone doing me a favor by blowing my head off with a high-powered rifle," Grizzard wrote. The quote came to me immediately after seeing an interview with Vice President JD Vance in which he casually referenced bringing about the end of the world.Â
Ben Fields: Conspiracy, disparaging the dead and other pastimes (Opinion) (opens the original)
Read excerpt
This week I grabbed three copies of the Gazette-Mail at random from the recycling box in my garage. I went to the obituary pages, writing down the ages of the deceased. One person died in their late 40s, the youngest age of anyone I found. The oldest was 100. When I had totaled the ages from those three editions, then divided by the number of obituaries, the average age came to 78.25 years, slightly below the U.S. average life expectancy of 79. Yes, dear reader, I willingly did math for this.Â
