    On Sept. 17, 1787, the U.S. Constitution was signed in Philadelphia. It comprises 4,543 carefully hand-written words, and it establishes a system of self-government with three separate and distinct branches of power that are given checks and balances to stop the abuses of power by the others. These words, densely gathered on only four pages of parchment, constitute the structure of our government, and this structure has been copied by modern democracies across the world.
