As subdivisions develop all around Mangawhai, it’s fascinating to look back and consider how this land has been divided historically, again and again. According to Native Land Court minutes (1869), Kaipara was divided between Manuhiri’s eldest son Kahikatearoa, who was to watch over the western side, and Manuhiri’s daughter, Tūrangi, who was to watch over the east, including Te Mangawhai. People of the inner Kaipara Harbour were at that time known as Te Uri-o-Kahikatearoa, later as Te Uri o Hau.

Mangawhai has long been shaped by its seasons, especially winter. In the winter of 1899, a typhoid outbreak in the Ōtamatea County made people so ill they were unable to plant their gardens or harvest food. Anaru Wi Apo wrote letters to government minister James Carroll on behalf of people in the area.
