A treacherous rip current came close to claiming the lives of several children swimming off the Gwynedd coastline, it has been claimed. Three local men leapt into action when the youngsters got into difficulty at Tywyn's expansive sandy beach. A regular beachgoer stated that "four or five" children were rescued in separate incidents towards the end of last week's heatwave. The incidents have reignited calls for a lifeguarding presence at a beach where rip currents are said to be "not uncommon".
