THE OWNER: Mike McKenna - 'If you give Shark a good horse, he can train it' (opens the original)
Read excerpt
We’re a small family syndicate. It started off life maybe seven years ago with different horses and different people, and over the years the people and horses have changed. It’s just me, my wife, and the three kids now. My wife and I go to most meetings, but she missed the last day. The one day she can’t come and the horse wins! I haven’t been an owner for very long, and we’ve had five wins with different horses, but it’s difficult for us being a small syndicate.
THE OWNER: George Waud - 'That was probably his best performance' (opens the original)

When did you first get involved in racing? I used to go racing with my mother when I was a child, and I always loved it. My father lived quite near Newmarket, so we’d go racing there. When I moved to America in the 1990s I got more involved. I was a co-owner of a horse called Society’s Chairman who won a Grade 3 at Gulfstream Park. He ended up qualifying for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Mile, which was a very exciting day in 2010. We got beat by Goldikova, and there’s no shame in that. It was a double
THE OWNER: John Fleming - 'It would be impossible not to get the bug for racing' (opens the original)

I used to work for Smurfit Publications who published Pacemaker magazine back in the ‘80s in the UK. From there, I went on to work for various publishing companies, and I publish the Irish Racing Yearbook myself. As well as all of that, I’m an accountant, and a lot of my clients are in the bloodstock industry. I’ve worked in the industry from the day I left college really. The first share of a horse I had in training was a horse called Wild Strawberry in 1991. That was with Park Lane Racing and
THE OWNER: Marcella and Ronan Burns (opens the original)
Read excerpt
Marcella, with no previous background in racing, how have you found your experience as an owner, and being so close to the action? Marcella: It’s been a lot of fun. It started off when Ronan and I were only dating. We were on holidays in Barbados, we’d only known each other five months and Ronan’s dad had a late entry to the English Derby with New Approach. We had to vacate where we were staying because it had no WiFi and he needed to see the race. We made our way to a little internet café somew
THE OWNER: Peter Tarrant - 'It's all about the dream' (opens the original)
Read excerpt
How did you get involved in racing and breeding? My family have had horses with the O’Briens going back 45 years. My father had horses in training with Frank, David’s father, and with David himself. I’ve had horses with David going back 20 years, maybe even a little bit more. My grandfather was interested in racing and my parents had a family business, so the only holidays they ever took were to escape to the races. I’ve been going racing since I was knee-high.
