The plants with blue in their name which aren't blue at all! (opens the original)

    Excerpt · English

The colour blue may be interpreted in many ways, we are all aware that plants with true blue flowers, are irresistible to the buyer and good sellers for the nurseryman. However, it irks me somewhat that some plants with the word blue in their name are not blue at all! Take Diascia ‘Blue Bonnet’, at best these are deep mauve, maybe verging on blue for they open mauve and then darken as the flowers age. In fact, Derry Watkins has the best description for them, “Soft, bruised-looking, purple-flushe

Sensory garden near Great Yarmouth is a must-visit for everyone (opens the original)

Last month I had the pleasure of opening the Community Sensory Garden at Caister near Great Yarmouth. There is a café adjacent to the garden, charmingly called ‘The Rabbit Hutch Café’, which also doubles as a cinema. I confess to being absolutely surprised and delighted by the results of this community that has pulled together to make a fantastic space enjoyed by all. The garden is part of a playing field which was unused, today it is accommodating visitors and families to share and participate

A few days ago, we discovered quite a large Eucalyptus tree that had suddenly decided to lean precipitously in the Woodland Garden. In the interests of safety, we thought it was best to take immediate action, so Will felled it! Fortunately, he was able to take it down without too much damage and we decided to make it into a large log pile; largely to save us work whilst the garden is open to visitors. So has begun another chapter in the life, and death in the woodland for at last we have a clear

With the intense heat this summer, it’s been difficult keeping indoor plants healthy and thriving. In our orangery, we have a plant of Impatiens sodenii ‘Ravishing Rei’. This is a large-growing form with mauve flowers and glamorous dark burgundy stems. Despite being in a very large pot and drinking 1 ½ gallons of water daily, it is not thriving. My solution was to stand it outside in a shady spot; within a week, it was revived with new flower buds forming. This year, I am growing Achimenes erect

Climbers that bloom in the gardens from now on (opens the original)

Excerpt · Neutral tone · English

    Read excerpt

At this time in the gardening year, climbers that bloom from now on are extremely useful for growing up and over shrubs, lending them a second season of interest. Tropaeolum tuberosum ‘Ken Aslet’ is the one to get if you can. I say "if you can" because some nurseries can be slightly less than truthful for the straight T. tuberosum, and the Ken Aslet clone cannot be distinguished apart when in leaf. The difference is that ‘Ken Aslet’ begins flowering in July whilst the straight form doesn’t flowe
