PREVIOUS commentators assumed that because John Braine was Librarian at Bingley, he based his novel Room at the Top on events that primarily happened there. He was in fact also Librarian at Newbiggin by the Sea, Northumberland and at Dalton, Kirklees. His experiences at these locations plus Bingley helped shape the final published story. THE intention of my two features on John Braine is to historically describe his life and influences, not to make comment on his changing political or religious views and background. Accredited in some publications as being from Bingley and others from Thackley, Braine was born in a small, terraced house in Westgate, Bradford in April 1922.
