The days between Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) are supposed to be a time of reflection, a time when God decides whether or not to inscribe you into the Book of Life. You can only ask God to forgive you for sins against God; for sins against humans you need to ask their forgiveness individually. In theory, I think this is a lovely idea. But in practice, every time I think of people whose forgiveness I should ask for, I get angry all over again about wha

I am alone in my family in the relief that summer is waning. Today is a gross rainy day, just the way I like it. This weather, though, is torture for Bailey, who just spied a truck, but when running for the doggie door, realized it was raining. Truck! Rain! What’s a girl to do? Don’t worry. She figured it out. And is now barking—loudly—from the front room. Anyway…You’ll think of something…about shellfishMy family has a very complicated history with shellfish. Pork and shellfish are the bedrocks

Since the last newsletter, I’ve had two dinners out with friends, a breakfast with the Husband at our favorite diner, twice went to my favorite cafe to write, donated platelets (again! there’s a shortage, you know), and on Sunday, I’m not only walking with two friends in the morning, but I’m going out. In the evening. To see a movie. In a theater! Crazy! We’ll see if I live to tell the tale.

If I were the type of person who watched Love Island USA—which clearly I’m not—I’d be mourning the fact that the season is over and that I’d have nothing to do with my nights except—gasp!—talk to the Husband. I’d probably be enjoying all the dish happening online as we learn that Sincere’s mom (wait, who is Sincere?) is a nasty person and for some reason everyone now hates Zach (as if I knew who that was!), and I’d probably be aghast at how many contestants—from the U.S.A.—didn’t know where New
