What If the Systems We Rely On Failed? (opens the original)
Read excerpt
If I could choose a particular time for the systems we rely on to fail, it would be in the winter. I’m already prepared and stockpiled, ready to be snowed in and fully independent for months. My wifi would stop working, and I probably wouldn’t be affected otherwise until I decided to hike out to call my mom and let her know I’m okay. Only then would I realize the rest of the world is in the same boat.My position is a bit unique. I’m isolated and independent from the grid. I buy supplies, but I a

When I received word he’d broken his neck, I knew I had to leave the mountain to be with him for whatever might come next. I was four and a half when my parents brought Brayden home. Preparing for a Winter Snowed In on the Mountain (opens the original)
Read excerpt
This morning, I noticed a fireweed plant across the pond is finished flowering and already throwing its fluffy seeds, making me think I’d better get ready. There’s a whole month of summer left, yet preparing for winter on the mountain is already at the forefront of my mind. I’m excited for the change. Things have been too dry for too long. I consider winter on the mountain to be from November to April, and I need to plan to be snowed in for that time. Nights have been cool, often dipping below 1
