Of the moment // September (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Positive tone

I have long loved the back-to-school energy of September. In the words of the great Nora Ephron, via the classic You’ve Got Mail: “Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.” This September was made even better by actually being in New York in the fall during that rare week of actual perfect weather: 70s, sunny, blue skies, no humidity. <a class="image-link image2 is-viewable

When it comes to jewelry, I tend to take a less-is-more approach. I wear the same pieces over and over again, and am not really that moved by the thought of expensive jewelry. Even for fancy occasions (aka a wedding), I usually wear the same statement pieces—I’m most interested in jewelry that is simple and sophisticated and goes with everything OR something that has a little personality and pizzazz (aka I love Haricot Vert). Read with Jenna is usually a little bit too light for my taste, but a good palate cleanser. <a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" h

What I want my daughter to learn from me (opens the original)

While I’m not one of those people who is like—“I never knew true love until I had a child! The greatest thing I’ve ever done in life is have a baby! Being a mom is the best/hardest/most rewarding job ever!”—it is a pretty wild, very rewarding and often extremely fun thing to bring a new human being into this world and then get to witness how they grow up within it.<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!NNLC!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:st

How to meet your neighbors (opens the original)

    Excerpt · Neutral tone

    Read excerpt

When my husband and I moved to San Diego from New York City nine years ago, we didn’t have any friends here. I had some college acquaintances and friends-of-friends, but we were really starting a new just-married life from scratch. One of the very first people we met was a woman who lived two doors down from our apartment complex: David ran into her right after moving in when she was walking her pug and he was walking ours, I noticed they had a pug pillow on their porch and a friendship was quic
